"The Sky's the Limit," a show of paintings in pastel by Carol
Abitabilo Ast will open at State of the Art Gallery August 4,
2010. The work in this exhibition represents a number of places the
artist has traveled, some familiar Ithaca scenes, a special
fascination with the sky, and expertise with her medium - soft pastel.

About the sky, Abitabilo Ast says, "[It is] always the backdrop,
whether looking out a window or being out-of-doors. In this exhibit
it becomes a prominent feature. While the sky emerged from chorus
line to center stage, the nature of the land also
changed: landscape is often associated with shades

of green, but only a few of the paintings here have any green in them
at all. Winter, rock and dusk
rob the land of its traditional color, but present the viewer with
beauty of a different sort."

She continues: "The exhibit also includes some paintings of other
subjects because basically, I use my pastels to preserve and share
what I find beautiful. Sometimes life seems to compel us to
confront controversy, stress, frustration, anger. To allow
loveliness in any manifestation to enter the mind is to nurture our
humanity. I hope this exhibit succeeds in some way in that direction."

A reception for the artist will be held Friday, August 6 from
5-8pm. There will be a wine tasting at this event compliments of
Damiani Wine Cellars. "The Sky's the Limit" runs through August
29. Carol will be at the Gallery every August Saturday all
afternoon. Hours are Wed. Fri., 12-6pm and Sat. and Sun.,
12-5pm. State of the Art is located at 120 W. State Street in
Ithaca. The gallery is ADA accessible with curbside
