March 2010 - our Annual Juried Photography Show

Opening reception: Friday, March 5th, 5-8 pm
State of the Art will host its twenty-first Annual Juried Photography
Competition this month. A minimum of $500 in prizes will be awarded
at a reception March 5 at 6:30pm by prize judge Steven Skopik of the
Ithaca College Department of Cinema, Photography and Media
Arts. This year for the first time, the gallery will have a
"People's Choice Award" to be given away at the end of the show.
Voting will be by ballot at the gallery only. That award will be $75.00.
This is a very popular exhibition in the region and it always garners
top quality photographic images that range from traditional negative
prints to digital work. Show dates are March 3-28, 2010 and the
reception is 5-8 pm on March 5th.
In conjunction with the exhibition is a special event at the gallery:
"The Effect of Electronics on Art". This will be a panel discussion
among 3 artists about how the field of electronics has affected their
artmaking and broadened the definition of what constitutes "art" on
Wednesday, March 24 at 7pm. Panelists are:
Tammy Renee Brackett, Asst Professor of Digital Media and Animation
at Alfred State College
Rhonda Morton, Founder of Alligator Mouth Improv, Corning NY, and
John Criscitello, Founder of Video/Art/Ithaca, Ithaca NY.
This event is free and open to the public.
120 W. State Street in Ithaca. Gallery hours are Wed.-Fri., 12-6pm,
Sat.& Sun., 12-5pm. The gallery is ADA accessible with curbside

Dan McPheeters is part of a 2-person exhibit "Private Shadows and
Dreamscapes" at the Houghton Gallery in Corning until March 12th.
Margy Nelson won a prize for her entry in the WSKG "Art in Motion"
show, has a piece in the "Living Light" exhibit at the Tompkins
County Public Library, and both she and Francie Fawcett are
represented in the Laboratory of Ornithology's traveling exhibit "The
Sweet-voiced Bird Has Flown: Common Birds in Decline".
The Corner Gallery in Ithaca is hosting the 8th Annual Spring Bouquet
Show from 6 March to 30 April with eleven artists including Gallery
members Diane Newton, Patty Porter, and Sheryl Sinkow.
Patty Porter has paintings on exhibit at the PADMA Center for Natural
Therapies at 114 W Buffalo St.
"Black and White" at the Exhibit A Gallery in Corning includes work
by Stan Bowman and is open until March 12th.
Jan Kather is exhibiting this month at 16MM Cafe in Soho London UK as
part of "Exquisite Corpse Volume 1" and is also showing at "Women in
the Arts: the Feminine" in the Third Floor Gallery at Corning
Community College's Academic and Workforce Development Center at 318
Madison Ave in Elmira.
The Post Decade Show at CSMA in Ithaca this month includes work by
Gallery members Andrea King and Eva Capobianco.
The 5th Annual "Art of Friends" show at the Unitarian Church includes
Gallery members Carol Abitabilo Ast, Mary Ann Bowman, Stan Bowman,
Leslie Brill, Eva Capobianco, Frances Fawcett, Elisabeth Gross-Marks,
Jay Hart, Jan Kather, Andrea King, Margy Nelson, Diane Newton, Diane
Ozolins, Stephan Phillips, Yvonne Piburn, Patty Porter, Mary Schuler,
Janet Byers Sherman, Ben Sherman, Sheryl Sinkow, Marian VanSoest, and
David Watkins, Jr.
The Main Street Gallery in Groton is hosting an invitational show
which includes work by Erica Pollock.
Jay Hart's NYC 5-artist lobby show "The Altered Landscape" at 499
Park Avenue has been extended to March 12, 2010.
Elmira College's George Waters Gallery is hosting "Women Artists - an
Invitational Show" with six artists including Andrea King.
