In August, visitors to State of the Art Gallery will be taken to places 
far away and places far above the Earth from where they can view vast 
expanses of five continents in strikingly imaginative colors.

Member artist Jay Hart, in his first solo show at the gallery titled 
"Places Far Away," presents large-format geographic art that displays, 
he says, especially fine patches of the earth's terrain.

"By making compositions of landscape pattern at scales more broad than 
can be perceived in real life," he says, "I try to introduce a fresh 
look onto our planet. I do this in part because it is beautiful in such 
wide sweeps, and in part because many of us need more familiarity with 
our surroundings. The knowing from even casual examination of regional 
arrangements strengthens our sense of place, and for some gives both 
pleasure and confidence.

"Most of the exhibited works are simple elevation surfaces whose color 
and shadow attributes were chosen by the artist. Statements of mood 
infer the basic character of the area, but in some cases, such as the 
peninsulae, a standard treatment has been adopted to highlight the 
differences between places."
