SOAG Members on Gallery Night

Gallery Night in Ithaca is a coordinated night of openings at a dozen
art galleries within walking distance of the Ithaca Commons. The State
of the Art Gallery will be participating in Gallery Night with its
annual Photo Show award ceremonies -- a show that is not open to members
of SOAG. But that doesn't mean the SOAG members won't be on view on
Gallery Night!

Gretchen's Barn
Diana Ozolins, /Gretchen's Barn,/ oil on canvas

*Diana Ozolins* will be the featured artist at the Titus Gallery in a
show continuing through April 30, 2008. This is a retrospective show for
Diana, featuring canvases from decades past.

"I paint sections of the Finger Lakes Trail that I have hiked by myself
or with friends. I love the way the sun comes through the trees, what
you can see, what you can almost see, and what dissolves in light or
distance. Driving along back roads, I search for the perfect combination
of shapes and colors in the fields and farms of Danby or West Hill,
looking for the colors and textures of pasture, grain, and trees and how
they change with distance and atmosphere. I also travel to paint --
sometimes it seems necessary to get away from daily cares and chores to
carve out time for an intensive painting experience. It recharges my
painting and I always come back with some new understanding of the
complexity of color or design. The paintings in this show span the
seasons here in the Finger Lakes around Ithaca. There are also paintings
from one of my trips to Ireland."

Storm Coming
Patty Porter, /Storm Coming, /oil on canvas

*Patty Porter* is featured with two other artists at the Upstairs
Gallery.in a show that will run through March 22. Patty's work in this
show comes from a trip that she and a group of friends took last summer
to a small island just off the Canadian shore of eastern Lake Ontario.

"My first impression of painting opportunities was disappointing.
Nothing caught my eye demanding to be painted. But once I stopped
fighting the obvious calm I was captivated. Amherst Island was like time
traveling into the past. Most days we saw more people riding bicycles
than riding in cars. The pace was slow and contagious.

"I left Amherst Island on the ferry with a portfolio of wet sketches,
not knowing what I would do next. As the weather got cooler and I began
transforming my sketches into larger paintings in my studio I found
myself being transported back to that more peaceful, slower paced life.
To date I've created 9 paintings inspired by that tranquil location. As
I've worked on each one I have gained a new appreciation for the
opportunity to spend long periods of time contemplating natures beauty
and to transform that beauty into paintings on canvas. I hope that you,
as viewers, can experience the tranquility of Amherst Island through my
paintings."

Made in Occupied Japan
Yvonne Piburn, /Made in Occupied Japan,/ oil on canvas

*Yvonne Piburn* joins Patty Porter in the current show at the Upstairs
Gallery. (Local artist Dora Flash is the third participant in that show.)

"The current world environment is anything but tranquil. Focus on
nature, beauty and order is vital to maintaining a sense of balance. In
these paintings the quiet matter of retreat multiplies in an attempt to
recover peace of mind. The place of tranquil isolation begins to shimmer
and reflect and, again, to multiply. Here is an attempt to maintain a
balance between inner and outer worlds. Color muted, objects clustered,
landscapes of intimate proportion restructure the precarious balance
that confronts tranquility.

The Titus Gallery is located at the east end of the Ithaca Commons, next
to Simeons.
The Upstairs Gallery is located in Dewitt Mall at 215 N. Cayuga St.
