Dear Friends of the Gallery,

This month, the State of the Art Gallery presents an exhibit of works in 
oil by Barbara Mink and drawings in pastel by Diane Newton.

 
*Barbara Mink: *"I love the way the depth of oil painting lends itself 
to random movement and controlled power. In what I think of as abstract 
naturalism, I take nature and elaborate upon it with the pleasure and 
intelligence of human sensibility, an uninhibited enlargement of the 
human experience."

    Arboles Andariegos*Diane Newton:* " I call these works drawings
    because, after time spent both drawing and painting, I find the
    process of making these pictures more akin to drawing. The medium,
    however, is closer to painting than traditional drawing materials.
    The basis of pastels is the same sort of permanent pigments used in
    the manufacture of oil, acrylic and watercolor paints. Pastels,
    properly framed under glass and well cared for, are permanent works
    of art. The medium dates back to the eighteenth century and it is
    said, pastel paintings of the time -- mainly portraits -- look as
    pure in color as when they were made."

Meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday, August 4. In 
addition, Diane Newton will be at the gallery on Saturday, August 5 and 
Saturday, August 26 from noon until 5:00 pm; and Barbara Mink will be at 
the gallery on Saturday, August 12 and Saturday, August 19 from noon 
until 5:00 pm.

Also, in the members gallery, you can see new works in a variety of 
media by other members of the gallery. We hope to see you at the State 
of the Art in August!
