Beyond the Ice
44 x 44, Danmark Fjord, Northern Coast of Greenland

Against the north slope of Greenland's icecap is a cold and arid zone. In summer it lights up and shows sea ice in contrast with the snow- derived icecaps. After the warmth of the last century the valleys of old ice gougings are wormy and dry, seeming dominant on the landscape.

Western Rift

Western Rift
56 x 36, East and Central Africa

A crescent of big lakes and bounding faults (in western Uganda, and parts of Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania) makes a puzzle which had confused the leaders of science for more than a half century in the 1800's. Risings on the valley's shoulders turned out to be the compressions from a push-pull series of movements which today gives a relatively open rift floor. This is interrupted by an arch in the floor's level from top to bottom, and by the imposition of both the Virunga volcanoes and upfaulted blocks like the Ruwenzori of uppermid-right, whose three mile high summits are given a fine alternate name: the Mountains of the Moon.

Cairo
44 x 36, Midwestern U.S.

Rivers have collected in mid-continent of North America for a long long time. Here the Mississippi and Ohio join at Cairo (care-o) to reach their final broad valley. Upstream of the confluence the Mississippi has formed broad floadways through the hills of its last miles, while the Ohio had been less constant in its work against its barriers, and has just merely sliced through. Below their joining the two rivers have built a very flat and radical way - the surrounding hills and valleys in the lower areas have been sliced down by the waft of meanders through the ages.

Grapefruit Grapefruit
40 x 69, Central Florida

Land made from sea, this region is a set of coral limestone surfaces raised from a watery level by the wrenchings of continental drift. Central Florida has an interesting pattern of heights despite its reputation for flatness. The various shades show only elevation, the lakes nestle in ridges of surprising geometry, and in many places are the markings of tree strands. The most prominent isolated hills are landfills.

Amhara
40 x 40, Northeast Africa

Around the Semien Mountains of Ethiopia curl a series of drainages collected as the Tekerre River, which just left of the area becomes the Atbara of eastern Sudan, a vital piece of the Nile's waters flowing into Egypt. Small farms cover every valley and ridge below the highest peaks, and extensive forests are absent. The three mile high summits are among the few soft slopes in this scene.
