From the Road
Diane Newton and Sheryl Sinkow
Wednesday, July 2, through Sunday, July 27, 2008
Opening reception: Friday, July 11, 5:00-8:00 pm
A few years ago, two friends, Sheryl Sinkow and Diane Newton, both of Ithaca and both members of the State of the Art Gallery, went to New Mexico together. They each had cameras and throughout their trip, took many photographs. They thought about having a show together one day of work that emanated from their road trip.
“From the Road” is that show. Sinkow is showing photographs and giclee prints on canvas and Newton is showing drawings in oil pastel. “From the Road” includes more images than those from the New Mexico trip; there are photographs and drawings from other trips each artist has made in her travels in the past few years.
About her work, Sinkow says,"I attempt to incorporate more into my landscape photographs than just a sense of place. A feeling of movement juxtaposed with the stillness of the photographic medium is a constant challenge. The photographs taken with Diane and with our friendship as influence enabled me look at these landscapes with that in mind."
She continues: "While Diane and I had hoped to take another road trip to photograph in preparation for this exhibit, life had other intentions -- so, we expanded our theme to include imagery from other travels but 'from the road' was always configured in the picture. Some of the photographs were taken while walking around Ithaca - some inspired by conversations with each other. 'On Diane's Shoulder' (right) was a shot I was lucky enough to capture because I had a camera in my purse and Diane had the insight to say that it would make a nice picture. It doesn't get much better than being able to collaborate with a good friend."
“Although I live in a beautiful part of this country,” Newton says,” beauty is not what moves me to take a photograph -- rather it’s when I come upon a landscape that startles and intrigues me; a view in which things -- shapes, colors, textures, light and shadow -- have come together at the moment in a way that I haven’t seen before. It is a landscape that has potential for drawings that I want to make and then share with others.”
This exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the
New York
State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program.
