Invitational Show
November 29 - December 30
Reception: 5:00 pm, Friday, December 1, 2006
Members of the State of the Art Gallery have invited 40 artists from the Ithaca area and beyond to exhibit their work in our 2006 Invitational. Paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics and video will fill our two galleries for the month of December. Below is a sampling of the exhibitors.
David Mazzarella, Velvet ---
David's work is a reflection of classical styles and ideas, both western and eastern. Much of his work incorporates structural steel (pipe, angle iron etc.) with the view that all his work is in essence, a community effort.

|
Fernando Llosa, Painting Does Strange Things --- "To walk away and stand aside; to gain perspective from afar; to own your time and challenge fear. all these afford the gift of seeing."
|
Denny Smith, Straight Line --- "For me, drawing is a visceral experience. Sometimes it is about formality. Sometimes it is about meditation. It is always about my need to express and expend the energy in my core."
|
Dan Goldman, Untitled --- Dan Goldman works in oils and acrylics, house paint and spray paint, pen and pencil, on canvas, paper, cardboard, broken skateboards, windows and doors and other detritus. He also does assemblage and takes a lot of pictures. This is Dan's first Ithaca show, and he's really stoked about it.
Sheryl D. Sinkow --- "Photography affords me the opportunity to recreate a feeling, share an experience or make a connection."
|
|
Judith Bernstock, Oak Leaves --- Her paintings transform nature into a highly personal harmony of color and design. Her work is informed by her knowledge of art history which, like nature, serves as a point of departure for intuitive interpretations of subjects.
Ethel Vrana, Patterns -- "I have mainly been a painter of impressionistic landscapes. Recently, I have been experimenting with other forms and techniques such as collage and computer generated art. These new techniques have led me into more non-objective abstractions as well as representational works with a new type of composition."
|
Germaine Colvin, painter: "I love the colors of nature. It is a challenge to try to capture her innuendos of color, movement, image."
Kathleen Hawkes and Jessica Brown, video: Rituals of Femininity is a video installation that depicts discrete female beautification rituals, and dissects routine private events that women have been socialized to perform.
Nancy Neaher Maas, watercolor: "I love the unpredictability and spontaneity of watercolor. It allows me to paint in a conventional mode, as well as to create unique collages or weavings. The weavings give tactile expression to rhythmic movement, a concept nor ordinarily associated with the watercolor medium."
